Digital Product Passport FAQ
What is a Digital Product Passport (DPP)?
A Digital Product Passport is a digital record of a product, opened by scanning a QR code on it. For a garment it is expected to hold what the item is made of, where it was made, its carbon footprint, chemical declarations and care and repair information. The EU sets the rules in the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR, Regulation 2024/1781); for garments they apply once the textile delegated act does.
Is a DPP mandatory for garments exported to the EU?
Not yet. DPPs become mandatory product group by product group through ESPR delegated acts. Textiles and garments are in the first priority wave: the textile delegated act is expected in 2027, and garment DPPs are expected to be required from 2028–29.
Does ESPR apply to factories in Bangladesh?
Yes. ESPR Article 1(2) applies to physical goods placed on the EU market wherever they are manufactured, so Bangladesh factories are in scope through their EU buyers and importers.
Can the DPP QR code go on the hangtag?
Possibly, but do not plan on it. ESPR Article 10(1)(b) allows the product, its packaging or accompanying documents, as the textile delegated act will specify, and recital 37 says the carrier should be on the product itself where possible. A hangtag is usually removed after purchase, so for garments plan on a QR on the sewn-in care label.
Is there free DPP software for garment factories?
Yes. DPPLive is free for up to 10 Digital Product Passports a month per factory. It is built in Dhaka for garment factories and covers the DPP generator, QR codes, a public passport page in 9 languages and the EU registry submission file.
How much does DPPLive cost?
DPPLive is free for up to 10 Digital Product Passports a month per factory, after a free four-week pilot (one style, full data). Factories that need more than 10 DPPs a month, team accounts or the carbon calculator get custom pricing. Payment is by bKash; card payment is coming soon.
Who owns the DPP data?
The factory does. Under the DPPLive data processing agreement the factory owns all of its DPP data and DPPLive acts as its processor. Everything can be exported in JSON-LD at any time.

- 1Who needs it: every garment placed on the EU market, wherever it is made. Bangladesh factories are in scope through their EU buyers.
- 2When: the EU DPP Registry went live on 20 July 2026; garment DPPs are expected to be required from 2028–29.
- 3Where the QR goes: on the product where possible (ESPR recital 37), so for garments the sewn-in care label; the textile delegated act will fix the exact position.
The EU DPP Registry is live. Textile passports are next.
The EU Central DPP Registry launched on 20 July 2026. ESPR applies to every product placed on the EU market wherever it is made, so EU brands will ask their suppliers for passport data.
The textile delegated act, which fixes exactly which data a garment passport must carry, is expected in 2027. Garment DPPs are expected to be required from 2028–29. Without one, a shipment can be refused at EU customs.
