How to Calculate a Product Carbon Footprint for a Garment DPP

A product carbon footprint for a Digital Product Passport is built in four steps: meter the plant (energy, fuels, steam per line), allocate to the style (per-piece energy and process share), apply emission factors (grid, fuels, materials) and roll up under a recognised method — ISO 14067 or the EU's PEF with the apparel category rules. The textile delegated act (expected 2027) will fix what the passport must show; the JRC's 2025 work already proposes a footprint indicator.

Step 1
Meter the plant
Primary data beats estimates: electricity per line, gas and steam for dyeing and finishing, diesel for generators, per production day. Sub-metering the energy-hungry processes (dye house, drying, compressors) is the single highest-value investment in footprint credibility.
Step 2
Allocate per style
Divide metered energy across output — by pieces, kilograms or machine-hours — so each style carries its share. Batch-level allocation (per PO, per dye lot) is exactly the granularity the battery passport already demands, and where textiles are likely heading for high-value lines.
Step 3
Apply emission factors
Convert activity data to CO₂e: national grid factors for electricity, standard factors for fuels, and material factors for fibres and trims (supplier-specific where you can get them, database values where you cannot — flagged as secondary data).
Step 4
Roll up under a method
ISO 14067 gives the international product-carbon-footprint rules; the EU's PEF method adds category rules for apparel and footwear. Report cradle-to-gate as your factory deliverable, with lifecycle extensions per the method your buyer specifies.

Where the number lives
The ESPR's information framework (Article 7 and Annex I parameters) explicitly contemplates carbon and environmental footprints; the textile delegated act will fix the exact field. Structure your data so the number, its method and its data quality travel together — a footprint without a method label is marketing, not compliance.
Precedent
Batteries set the bar
The first mandatory passport (Regulation 2023/1542, from 18 February 2027) carries a carbon footprint per manufacturing plant and batch. Expect textile ambition to grow toward that bar — factories with metered, allocatable energy data will simply re-map fields.

Quick Answers

Is a carbon footprint mandatory in the textile DPP?

Not fixed yet. The Commission's JRC preparatory work (December 2025 milestone) proposes a manufacturing footprint indicator for apparel, but the binding data list arrives with the textile delegated act expected in 2027. Batteries already show the direction: their passport carries carbon data per manufacturing plant and batch.
ISO 14067 or PEF — which method should a factory use?

They are compatible layers: ISO 14067 is the international product-carbon-footprint standard; PEF is the EU's environmental-footprint method with category rules for apparel and footwear. For EU-bound garments, structure your calculation so it can be expressed either way — the underlying activity data is the same.
Is cradle-to-gate enough for a garment DPP?

Start there — it is the part a factory controls: materials in, energy and processes inside the plant, packaging out. Full lifecycle (use phase, end of life) relies on modelled assumptions your buyer or method rules supply. A clean cradle-to-gate number per style is the factory's deliverable.
How does DPP carbon data differ from CBAM's numbers?

Different mathematics: CBAM counts installation-level embedded emissions with ETS-style verification for listed goods (textiles excluded); passport footprints follow lifecycle methods per product. Meter energy at plant level once, and you can roll it up to either format.
