Battery Passport vs Textile DPP — What the First Rollout Teaches
The EU battery passport is the first Digital Product Passport to become mandatory — from 18 February 2027, under Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, for light-transport batteries, industrial batteries above 2 kWh and EV batteries. It is item-level, carbon-accounted per plant and batch, and its identifiers feed the same EU registry the ESPR created. Textiles run the identical arc roughly two years behind: delegated act expected 2027, application phasing 2028–2030. Batteries are the rehearsal every garment exporter gets to watch.

Textile passports arrive through the ESPR: working plan first (textiles prioritised, April 2025), the apparel delegated act expected in 2027, application phasing in 2028–2030. The registry those passports use is live from 19 July 2026 — and under ESPR Article 13 it stores battery identifiers too.

“18 February 2027” concentrates minds in a way “around 2027” never did. The textile equivalent will be one line in a delegated act — and the scramble will start the day it publishes. Factories preparing now skip the scramble.

No — it has its own law. The battery passport comes from the EU Battery Regulation (2023/1542), not the ESPR. But the systems interlock: ESPR Article 13 states the DPP registry also stores the unique identifiers of battery passports.
